May 2022

Everyone was able to attend our May 10 meeting at Bobbie’s.  She served a delicious Boston Cream Pie, and Mindy used Wikipedia to answer the question of why this two-layer cake is called a pie:  the dessert acquired its name when cakes and pies were cooked in the same pans, and the words were used interchangeably.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, June 14, at 1:30pm at Deanna’s.  We’ll be without Marty, who’ll be in Arizona for her sister’s birthday, and Joan, who’ll be on a train to Chicago with Rich celebrating their fifty-fifth anniversary.

Mary noted that the EBHQ show at the Alameda County Supervisors Building is happening in the summer rather than October-November this year so our CURVY challenge will be finished too late.  As a reminder each piece can be up to 80” in total outside dimensions.  We’re aiming to complete our projects and share them at our September meeting.

Joan started us off with a report on her recent retreat experience in Washington state.  Sewing machine problems prevented much progress on her Kaffe Fassett flower quilt.  She worked mostly on this lovely EPP piece.  [Sorry, everyone -- I was overzealous about editing my photos and came home with just a photo of the back!]

Betsy’s made a lot of progress on her Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt with just a few areas remaining to be filled in.  She’s considering finishing the bottom edge leaving the points intact rather than whacking them off – looks like a lot of work but would be beautiful.

Since last month Mary has whipped out a new baby quilt top and is quilting sloths into the solid areas.  Amazing work!

Mary brought back her now bound and completed Lone Robin.  It’s essentially a double-sided quilt because the back is nearly as beautiful as the front.

The EPP bug is spreading – this is Mindy’s beautiful start.

Mindy also shared her progress on an in-person Round Robin.  She’s the third contributor, and her red borders make an awesome addition to the piece.

Bobbi has pulled out a number of UFOs, including these two raw edge applique squares.  We suggested she make a third and combine them as a vertical triptych.  The ideal wall for displaying the finished piece in her apartment was also identified.

Bobbi’s been playing with the tiniest of scraps and overlaying netting to hold everything in place when she adds machine quilting.

More results from Bobbi playing with scraps.

The piece on Bobbi’s lap is made from scraps left over from a quilt Bobbi made.  Looks like a nice size for a pillow.

Arlene covered a piece of foam her husband is using as a cushion with some of her leftover blocks from Kaffe Fassett stripes.  Stunning!

She’s creating yet another design using the KF stripes.  Arleen provides an amazing example of continuing to ask “what if…”  Her variations on a theme seem limitless.

Arleen purchased some scrap seersucker fabric from Heartway International Fabric at VIC and created two beautiful small quilts taking advantage of the shape of the scraps.

Marty showed off her vest made by her neighbor Gay.

Since last month Deanna has finished her Hoffman Dream Big panel with different patterns quilted in each petal of the flower.  This piece is absolutely stunning!

Deanna also shared her progress on a quilt using an unusual panel she picked up at a give-away a while back.  Another beautiful make!
