April 2022

The group [minus Mindy] met at Mary’s and feasted on delicious cherry bars.  The recipe is already on our blog under the Recipes tab.  It now has Mary's note about halving the recipe which was originally posted in 2015.

This was our first meeting on the new day – second Tuesday of the month – and Sandy’s drive home was quick and trouble-free.  Thanks to everyone for being so accommodating!

Following on Mary’s suggestion that we find a new creative challenge for the group, potential inspiration words were collected in a hat.  The winner – CURVY.  Each piece can be up to 80” in total outside dimensions.  The plan is to submit the challenge pieces made by EBHQ members for the show at the County Supervisors Building which usually has a start date in October-November.  We’ll aim to complete our projects and share them at our September meeting.  This due date will be adjusted if necessary to meet the requirements for the County Supervisors Building show.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, May 10, at 1:30pm at Bobbie’s.

Mary shared her quilted but not yet bound Lone Robin and received a number of suggestions for binding colors.  The back is nearly as interesting as the front.

Mary had success selling her 4 Marketplace pieces as well as one show entry at Voices in Cloth.

Arleen’s most recent completion is another masterful demonstration of color interaction.  She asked for guidance on the quilting density and was assured that the quilt is finished.  The back is a print of very cute foxes Arleen found at JoAnn’s.  Unfortunately, she arrived home with less fabric than she purchased.  She improvised with a block of solid orange which clearly shows her beautiful quilting.

Betsy’s newest EPP project is moving right along.  The subtle coloration of the areas surrounding the flowers really set them off.

Marty shared that all of the quilts she put in VIC’s Marketplace sold, as well as one of her show entries.  The show entry had a sweet story about the recipient who was getting married soon.  She kept going back to look at the quilt (a wedding ring variety) and the two friends who were with her decided to buy it for her as a present.  How lovely that all of the work Marty put into that quilt was so appreciated and ended up in a home that will honor it.

Deanna is recently back from a visit to her son and daughter-in-law in Texas.  While there, she and Rich succumbed to familial pressure and are in the process of finalizing their purchase of a second home in a Del Webb community in Frisco, TX.  We all hope figuring out how to split their time between Frisco and Kensington goes smoothly.  We’ll have to Zoom Deanna in for our meetings while she’s living in Frisco.

Deanna shared a lovely small quilt she finished.  The top is one she picked up while at a Bishop’s Ranch retreat.  Her quilting is great, and the manatee fabric (a favorite animal of her son's) on the back is perfect.

Deanna also showed a colorful Chinese Coins quilt  that is for the Community Quilts.

Deanna is trying her hand at quilting a Hoffman Dream Big panel where different patterns are being quilted in each petal of the flower.  Stunning.

Joan is working on three projects right now.  Collecting Kaffe fabrics for her group challenge in Washington (she has a double layer cake and scored some Kaffe yardage on a free table).  She is starting another EPP project in colors that are not her usual.

Joan is nearing the finish line on a long-term heritage project.  She’s finished transcribing hand-written letters from her great grandfather, John C. Jaques to her great grandmother in New York while he was in California for the Gold Rush.  She’s developing the 300+ pages into a book and has donated the originals to the Bancroft Library at Berkeley.

This gorgeous composition is the BACK of Bobbie’s latest project.

And this is the FRONT!  Several of us think she actually has two separate quilts here.

She asked for and received suggestions on color of quilting thread.  As usual, there were a number of opinions ranging from gray to gold to red.
