Quilt Therapy, September, 2017

September 2017 meeting at Joan's

This was the deadline to show our challenge quilts--a 24 x 36 inch quilt inspired by the word "doors."

Sandy, Bobbie, and Deanna weren't at the meeting--Deanna is traveling and Sandy's son was visiting from Hong Kong.  Tracy was visiting Bobbie.

Arleen is back from Hawaii and was able to attend this meeting.  Joan had several projects to show, many from workshops at EBHQ.

Next meeting is at Betsy's house on October 5.

Barbara is holding the inspiration photo Joan used for her Doors challenge quilt.

Joan is doing a series and here is the first one.  One is looking in and the second is looking out from inside.  Unfortunately, I don't have a photo of the second one.

As a thank you to our outgoing president of EBHQ, here is the quilt that Joan received.  Blocks were made by various EBHQ members, assembled by Arleen, and quilted with puzzle piece motif.

Barbara's challenge door shows a gate with two birds as guardians.

This detail shows how she is using shoelaces to form the gate.

Mindy brought Bobbie's challenge quilt.

Mindy had several projects to show.  This jeans jacket is getting new life with embroidery and adding fabric flowers.

Mindy has begun creating the laticce backround to hold her hexie flowers.

Mindy's challenge quilt is a delightful barn door done by hand with great embellishments.

Marty's Door challenge quilt shows the doors to her fabric closet, an ironing board, sewing machine, and a couple of rolls of batting.  Wonderful.

Mary's challenge quilt shows a great door to a house with a flowering plant growing up the side of the house.

Arleen went a little wild with a Dr. Who Door challenge quilt, complete with a sound track.

The sign on the front says "Pull to Open" and when you do a song plays.

Arleen had another wonderful large quilt to show that needed four people to hold up.  A true Arleen style quilt.

Betsy took inspiration from Ann Arbor, MI where there are many fairy doors scattered throughout the city.

Details show a garden gnome and a cautionary sign.

And a fairy peeking out of the window in the door.

Released from the challenge quilt, Betsy made up a new lap quilt from one of "postcard" quilt patterns at Bay quilts.

May Meeting at Betsy's House

The weather cooled down enough to have a very pleasant meeting for May.  We had a full house, except for Arleen who was missed.  Next meeting at Mary's house.

Bobbie has been working on more of her Indian panels and brought two to share.  Pretty fantastic!

Mindy continues down the English Paper Piecing path with multiple flower hexies and with a great grey ombre background.    Here is a photo of her layout.
And here is another view of the background fabric.

She has also been doing more handstitching.

Sandy has completed her painting based on a photo she took in Hong Kong and it has been accepted into the student show.  Now we cross our fingers that she wins a prize.  Here's a photo of her photo of the painting.

Inspired by a couple of shirting quilts she saw at the SF Guild quilt show, Mary dove into her stash of shirting fabrics from a while ago and made this beauty.  Better than either of the quilts at SF!

 And the back

Joan took a class from Tara Faughnan and stepped outside her usual quilt design style.  She had a lot of fun putting together this beauty.

And the leftovers are on the back

She also is using information from Sue Spargo's book to embellish a quilt she had "finished" a bit ago.  Never to late to add more.

And can you believe it, she made yet another quilt, this one a "one shape" quilt shaded from light to dark.  Beautiful.

She plans to leave the edge as is.  It certainly adds interest to the piece.

Betsy has been fun playing with HST again, this time inspired by fabrics in a layer cake called Citrus.  This is another in a series of HST quilts and grew to a queen/king size.

And staying in the HST theme, Betsy used blended ombre fabrics to create this quilt from a photo she saw online.  The struggle was to make sure the HSTs were oriented in the correct direction in each block!

Marty too has been busy.  She made another one block wonder that proves picking the right fabric is key to making a spectacular quilt.  And the turquoise grunge fabric for the border really adds to the whole quilt.

Quilt Therapy at Deanna's House in a Storm

We met Thursday night at Deanna's and arrived just before a big storm unleashed a torrent of rain and high winds.  After only about ten minutes, the lights flickered, went out, then came back on.  Again this happened and then the lights were off for good.  Luckily, Deanna and Rich are prepared for such occasions and we were soon lit by a group of electric lanterns.  If the color in the photos seems a bit off, attribute that to the mood lighting of the lanterns.

Arleen, we hope all is going well with you and that your dad is recovering.

May meeting is at Betsy's house.  And get working on your challenge quilts with the inspiration word "Doors" and the dimensions of 24 x 36.

Even without power, Deanna served a delicious coconut cake and hot tea from the gas burner lit by Rich with a lighter.  We did not suffer in the least.

Bobbie continues to work on her India series and was looking very relaxed last night.

Betsy had finished her rainbow hexie quilt and the quilting in the hexies reminded us of sand dollars.

Betsy also had another half square triangle quilt, this one is called Ribbon Dance and the border fabric is called Psycho Wave and has mitered corners.

Mary brought her finished red, white and blue quilt

and another that the binding is almost done on.  This second one is following the scrap quilts pattern in the book that Joan lent several years ago.  The pink and black combination are striking.  Sorry that the color is off a bit in this one.

Barbara did a fantastic job of quilting her wall hanging (and later used it to keep warm after the electricity went off).

Sandy made it down from Redding (yeah!) and brought with her a finished quilt top inspired by a fabric she found again when reorganizing her studio.

Marty showed us a zippered bag she had learned how to make at Stone Mountain and Daughter.

Marty had also finished quilting her beautiful Poppy quilt and added a dragonfly to the flower center

It's even "raining" on her quilt with quilting.

Marty's neighbor, Gay, had given her templates to make a quilt Marty had admired at Gay's house and it turns out that Deanna had made the quilt a few years ago.  It just needs to be quilting.  Called Flights of Imagination, it was designed by Karen Matsumoto.

While Mindy couldn't attend, she did send photos of what she has been working on.

After show and tell, it was time for coconut cake.  Spectacular.
